Fissure vent on the East Rift of Kilauea called a "curtain of
fire". This vent was active during the first phase of the Puu Oo Eruption in January
1983. The burning trunk of an ohia tree in the right center is about 10 meters tall. The
silvery lava in the foreground is molten pahoehoe. A millimeter or two beneath the
silver-colored skin, the lava is incandescent.
