Mount Pelée and St. Pierre on the Island of Martinique, French West Indies. This 4,582 foot-high stratovolcano with lava domes erupted a large pyroclastic flow in 1902. The pyroclastic flow swept down the steep slopes of Mount Pelée at 100 miles per hour and wiped out the old city of St. Pierre, killing 28,000 people.
