Cotopaxi Volcano, Ecuador -- a stratovolcano nearly 6000 meters high. It has had more than fifty eruptions and lava flows. The 1877 eruption melted large volumes of snow and ice from the summit, causing mudflows that traveled 100 kilometers down adjacent riverbeds. The latest eruption was in 1942.
