Furnas Volcano on San Miguel Island, in the Azores, last erupted in 1630. Today its volcanic roots still provide heat to boiling hot springs. During our visit, the most dangerous thing appeared not to be the volcanoes, but the fast cars on the narrow roads.                                                                 Photo copyright Barbara Decker
