Hokkaido, Japan:  Mount Usu erupted on March 31, 2000 spewing a pyroclastic cloud of smoke and gas high into the air in the first eruption of the volcano in more than two decades. The eruption on the 732-meter volcano in southwestern Hokkaido was first detected along the western ridge of the mountain.                                                          Photo from Asahi Shimbun
