Ol Doinyo Lengai, an unusual volcano in East Africa, has been erupting during the past few years. The temperature of its molten lava is about 500 degrees C, almost half of that of basaltic lava. Its low temperature and low viscosity are related to its unuasual composition -- mainly sodium carbonate. Copyright photo by Jeffrey Brown, August 2002, used with permission.
