Obsidian.jpg (56497 bytes)

Aerial view from the south of Big Obsidian Flow in Newberry Caldera, Oregon. This thick rhyolite flow was erupted about 1300 years ago and covers more than a square mile. The dome-shaped mound over the vent and the concentric pressure ridges indicate the flow was very viscous.
