A large block of basalt thrown out by one of the small eruptions of Anak Krakatau,
Indonesia, during the 1960 expedition. During one unexpected explosion, some blocks sailed
overhead as we stood dumbly on the crater rim. Learning something about volcanoes became
more than just an academic exercise. The two men in the background are standing in the
crater made by the ejected block.
