Katmai National Park, Alaska. The great 1912 eruption of
Novarupta Volcano covered the flanks of Katmai Volcano with thick ash falls still visible
in this photo taken from a light plane 51 years later. The summit of Katmai collapsed into
a caldera (off to the right side) as magma was removed from beneath the peak. Trident
volcano (center) was erupting a lava dome and andesite flow.
