This week we follow up on the ongoing eruption
(March 20, 2001) of Mount Cleveland Volcano in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Based on
satellite data, the Alaskan Volcano Observatory
estimates that the explosive eruption lasted as long as 6 hours. The National Weather
Service estimated the top of the ash cloud was as high as 30,000 feet above sea level. The
satellite photo at left shows the ash plume from the recent eruption. Nearby Aleutian
