Lake Atitlán in Guatemala fills a huge prehistoric caldera 20-km wide. It is one of the most beautiful vistas in the world. Atitlán Volcano, silhouetted on the caldera rim, has erupted eight times since 1663. Sometimes the world is like a volcano, erupting into violence in unexpected ways; but often the volcano will regain its tranquillity as seen here. The Earth abides. Copyright photo by R.W. Decker? (Perhaps this was taken by one of the Dartmouth students on the field trip?)
